No player in the NFL has become a black owner… yet. I’m so excited to talk to you about this topic: Are there any African American NFL Owners? I’m sure you know that the NFL is a predominantly white league. But what about behind the scenes? Does the league reflect the diversity of its players?

Well, there was the late Eddie DeBartolo Jr., who owned the San Francisco 49ers until he sold the team to his sister in 2000. He was so beloved by players and fans alike that he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. So he certainly opened the door for African American ownership in the NFL. Unfortunately, no one’s stepped up to walk through it yet.

It’s a shame, really—African American players make up about 70 percent of the league, and yet we don’t have a single black owner out of the 32 teams. History has always been unkind to African Americans when it comes to attending or owning sports franchises. It’s like the song says—same game, different name.

The good news is that more and more football teams are being sold on the open market these days. And with the NFL expanding to Los Angeles in the near future, it’s only a matter of time before we finally get to see an African American eying the job of NFL owner. But don’t feel too bad. After all, the culture of the NFL is finally starting to break down the walls of racial division and open up its doors to more inclusion. Just look at the Rooney Rule and the success that it’s had. It tells you something about the changing mindset in the NFL.

And don’t forget, there’s still a chance that an African American NFL owner is just around the corner. Let’s just hope that whoever it is, they have the same contagious enthusiasm and success as DeBartolo did when he owned the 49ers. The idea of an African American NFL owner is a truly exciting prospect that could really change the game for the better.

There’s no doubt that there are a number of qualified African Americans out there who could potentially take the reins of a NFL team. They just need the opportunity. And, who knows, maybe that opportunity will present itself sooner rather than later. Wouldn’t it be great if we could one day look back on this moment as the beginning of something special?

Of course, there are still a few issues to work through when it comes to the prospect of an African American NFL owner. For starters, the issue of financing has to be addressed.
